Description

A Cultural Adjustment Mentor works closely with refugee families who have recently arrived in the United States and up to five years post arrival. The goal of an Acclimation Mentor is to assist the Refugee team in educating refugee families about the essentials of living in the US and facilitating an easier transition of acculturation 

Duties Could Include:  

  • Communicating and working directly with families for 2 to 3 weeks (or until goal is met) 

  • Teach about safe and sanitary food storage practices 

  • Work with the family to create a family daily/weekly cleaning and chore list  

  • Explain proper waste storage, garbage/recycling bins, and pickup schedule

  • Advise families of actions that can cause potential damage to their home (ex. Shower liner belongs inside of the tub and the curtain outside, remove pots off the stove that are done cooking, etc.) 

  • Collaborate with the family’s case manager to determine the current issues and expected outcome by the end of the session. 

Schedule: 

  • Volunteers have the freedom to establish their own schedule, including weekends.  This will be discussed with staff prior to volunteering. 

Commitment: 

  • Volunteers are asked to commit to seeing the family a minimum of 1x a week for 3 weeks.
